The Essan Community
Covering a geographical area of approximately 4000 square kilometres, the Kingdom of Essan can trace its history back to 1514 AD. Made up of over fifteen settlements, the kingdom houses the Nupe, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo and other Nigerian tribes.
With approximately fifty settlements affiliated to Essan kingdom, the population of Essan kingdom has about 1.1million people.
Their diversity, inclusive culture and way of life is also evident in their beliefs where different religions (including Muslims and Christians) live, co-exist, cohabit and work together for the good of their Kingdom.
A proud people known for farming, fishing and petty trading who love their culture and take pride in passing knowledge and traditions from one generation to the next.
Naturally Tribal is collaborating with the Kingdom of EssaN on a WIN-WIN-WIN business model where it is all about TRADE, NOT AID.
Our solution is simply to source ingredients from the Kingdom of Essan in an ethical and sustainable manner. Naturally Tribal will support with infrastructure to ensure quality and training to improve capabilities and skills for the people of Essan, particularly the women of Essan!

Our Facility
Our High Quality Shea Butter is ethically and locally sourced from the Kingdom of Essan, Niger State, Nigeria. Friendly trading is the foundation of our operations as this will ensure better prices, good working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers we partner with.
In the heart of the Kingdom of Essan, a beautiful oasis in Niger State, Nigeria sits 16 acres of pure nature where the Naturally Tribal Shea Processing facility resides. Shea is the main source of income for the women of this region and our relationship with the kingdom has blossomed into a purpose led commercial partnership.
Our facility which comprises of a warehouse, administrative block and processing factory, puts Essan and the Nigerian Shea Industry on the map, showcasing a facility (with creche and worship rooms) that harvests and processes the shea directly in the region, currently employing 18 people with plans to employ up to 70 members of staff in the future.
Our facility has created an ecologically sound and sustainable infrastructure, jobs, training and profitable business which impacts the country’s economy.
