SHEA BUTTER: The Diamond – Shea butter is truly one of Mother Nature’s miracles. Grown in West Africa, it is extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) and has been used for generations in Africa for skin care, hair care, baby care and food. Its goodness cannot be underestimated – from skin protection against any climate, hydration to its healing properties. Its unique make up of allantoin, Vitamin E and D, provitamin, essential fatty acids and phytosterols make it a truly amazing skin and hair ‘soul food’.
Refined Shea
We refer to this as ‘washed’ shea butter because of its typically white or off-white colour, in contrast to unrefined shea it undergoes processing to remove the shea natural nutty scent/ smell. Although its healing properties remain, it is as one would expect less than the unrefined shea butter
Unrefined Shea
It’s creamy beige to yellowy colour and nutty/ smokey scent sees this unfiltered body gold in its raw form hence it goes without saying that all its full properties are maintained – no chemicals, no preservatives!
Shea Butter Grades: Commercially this amazing ingredient can be classified into five grades:
Grade A: Premium, raw and unrefined using water for extraction and mixing
Grade B: Refined shea butter
Grade C: Thoroughly refined and using solvents such as hexane for extraction
Grade D:The butter’s lowest uncontaminated grade
Grade E: Do not go there!
Essan Shea Butter
Production of our Essan Shea Butter starts with nut collection during the shea season (April – August)
We believe in quality kernels = quality butter hence our quality controls starts at the collection point
Our shea collectors collect the nuts during the season and the nuts are part boiled, dehusked, dried and processed
We adopt a Semi automated production process.

With over ninety percent of the Shea butter exported from Africa being used in the food industry, this industry is the largest market for Shea butter and is often used as a replacement for cocoa butter. Approval for use in chocolate production, boosted by the European Union allowing a minimum 5% Shea to be present in edible products like chocolate has increased demand significantly (Official Journal Of The European Communities, 2000).
